This was constructed by King Suryavarman II who reigned from 1112 to 1152 AD. The central gopuram of the temple symbolises Mount Meru and the surrounding lower towers represent the lower peaks and continents. The temple is surrounded by a gigantic moat, 190 m wide which forms a rectangle of 1.5 km by 1.3 km. Scenes from Ramayan, Mahabharat, and churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan) are carved in great details on the walls. Click here for pictures.
Ta
Prohm
The special appeal
of Ta Prohm lies in the fact that it is still half swallowed by dense vegetation,
and shows how most of the Angkor monuments looked a few decades ago. The
vast root systems still embrace the crumbling walls of the temple. This
temple was built in 1186 and is dedicated to the mother of King Jayavarman
VII.Click here for pictures.
